Membership

All persons or entities who so wish to, may acquire membership status.

Admission is decided by the Board of Directors, in accordance with a signed proposal by the candidate and by two members in full enjoyment of their rights, which must be displayed at the headquarters of the society for a period of eight days, during which any complaint may be filed. After this deadline, The Board will consider the proposal and vote on it.

The members of the National Society of Fine Arts will have the following categories:

Founders

Those who, at the date of the merger between the “Society for the Promotion of Fine Art” and the “Grémio Artístico” (Artists’ Guild) were members of one of these groups or those who became members prior to April 1901, the month in which the Society’s first exhibition was inaugurated.

Nominal Members

Those without the above-mentioned conditions but who are interested in the progress of art and society.

Effective Members

Members, from Portugal or abroad, who hold Higher Education qualifications in the Visual Arts or in Architecture and Design, as well as those who, due to appreciation of their curricular and artistic merit and advice from the Technical Council, are proposed by the Board and admitted by the General Assembly.

Correspondent Members

Members who have permanent residence outside Portugal.

In addition to these categories, there are also:

Honorary Members

Individuals to whom, due to their highly and recognized artistic merit, or for their exceptional services to Portuguese culture or society. The General Assembly, on the proposal of the Board, may attribute this distinction in accordance with paragraph 7 of article 24 and paragraph 3 of article 31.

Benefactors

Persons or entities that have provided relevant services to the society. The General Assembly, on the proposal of the Board, may attribute this distinction in accordance with paragraph 7 of article 24 and paragraph 3 of article 31.

Rights

Having fulfilled their statutory duties, members are entitled:

  • To attend free of charge, or at a discount, the exhibitions held at the headquarters of the society and any other artistic or cultural manifestations promoted by it.
  • To compete for all the society’s exhibitions, under the conditions of the respective regulations.
  • To receive free of charge, or at a discount, all publications of the society;
  • To using the library, under the conditions of its regulations.
  • To enjoy the occasional perks, in artistic, literary, musical or similar sessions, held at the headquarters or sponsored by the society;
  • To take part in the sessions of The General Assembly, to vote or to be voted for.

Levels

Effective Member: All individuals qualified with higher education courses in fine arts, architecture and design, in Portugal or abroad.

Candidates for effective membership should fill in the online form, along with one passport-size photograph a non-returnable deposit of EUR 75.00. On acceptance, an annual payment of EUR 74.00 is due, or 2 six-monthly payment of EUR 37.00, or 4 quarterly payments of EUR 18.50.

Nominal Member: Candidates for nominal membership should fill in the online form, along with one passport-size photograph a non-returnable deposit of EUR 75.00. On acceptance, an annual payment of EUR 74.00 is due, or 2 six-monthly payment of EUR 37.00, or 4 quarterly payments of EUR 18.50.

Correspondent: As above, provided they have permanent residence outside Portugal.

Candidates for Correspondent membership should fill in the online form, along with one passport-size photograph a non-returnable deposit of EUR 37.00. On acceptance, an annual payment of EUR 18,50 is due, or 2 six-monthly payment of EUR 37.00, or 4 quarterly payments of EUR 9,25.
