Synopsis
A work needed in Portugal, indispensable for anyone who takes part in or is interested in Cultural Heritage and, in particular, for those who seek a better understanding of their own culture and intangible cultural heritage of Portugal. This anthropological approach seeks to enrich the reader through an appreciation of such remote periods of humanity, to cultural diversity, to the non-Western multi-ethnic world (also filled with invaluable spiritual, patrimonial richness), to the debate and international action both pre- and post-Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (UNESCO, 2003). The book includes highly significant documentation of a general nature, as well as socio-cultural and historical background information, the politico-institutional repercussions of this concept in Portugal, the spiritual, cultural expressions that are considered World Heritage along with those that appear in the National Inventory and, notwithstanding, the country’s legislation with regard to this topic.
